Measured October 5, 2026 / 20 local firms / one phone test

How localweb designsites loadon a phone.

We ran the same phone test on the home pages of 20 web design and marketing firms that come up for the Grand Valley, and on our own. Names, logos, phone numbers and faces are covered. Each firm is a letter.

Most local web design sites keep a phone waiting.

15 of the 20 home pages took more than 4 seconds to show their main content. The middle speed score was 58.5. Ours scored 97 on the same test, and we list our own weak spots below too.

01The trail race0 to 20 seconds

How long each home page took to show on a phone.

Every site leaves the trailhead at the same moment. A walker stops when that home page has shown its main content. The cairn at 4 seconds is where Google starts calling it poor.

02What slows a site downTen problems / Check and fix

Ten things that slow a site down or lose a customer.

Each row is one problem we measured and how many of the 20 home pages have it. Open a row to see how to check and fix it on your own site, and to show only the firms with that problem.

The biggest thing on the page, usually the top photo or headline, takes more than 4 seconds to show on a phone.

Google counts anything over 4 seconds as poor and uses this timing as one of its page experience signals. On a phone, people looking at an unfinished page often give up.

Check: Open pagespeed.web.dev, paste your address, pick Mobile, and read Largest Contentful Paint.

Fix: Shrink the top image and save it as WebP or AVIF, tell the browser to load it first, and hold sliders, video and chat widgets until the page has shown.

07The methodDated / Repeatable

How we measured.

Which pages, and when?

Home pages only, tested the evening of October 5, 2026. Our own site was tested the same way on October 6, 2026.

Which test?

Google Lighthouse 12, phone settings with its standard slowed connection. Each page ran three times and we report the middle run. Main content shown is the time until the largest piece of the page appears. Google treats anything over 4 seconds as poor.

How were problems counted?

With fixed lines: over 4 seconds, over 3 MB, over 1 second of blocking files, over 250 KB of unused code or image savings, and any failing contrast, unnamed button or skipped heading. Prices published means a price for the firm’s own services on the home, services or pricing page. Tap to call means a phone link anywhere on the phone home page.

How exact is it?

One test, from one computer, on one network. Scores move a few points from run to run, so treat close numbers as a tie. Sites change. We measure every page again, ours included, before we update this one.
